Bryshere Gray, widely known for his role as Hakeem Lyon on the hit TV series Empire, was arrested on Sunday (June 13) following a reported physical altercation at a Homewood Suites hotel in Virginia.

According to an arrest report, Gray allegedly assaulted an associate, Dustin Wilkins, during a dispute over a hotel payment. Wilkins told authorities that while attempting to assist Gray, the actor punched him—striking him once and nearly knocking him down—then followed up with what he described as a “blunt blow.”

In an interview with WAVY, Wilkins spoke cautiously about the incident, suggesting that Gray may be struggling with his mental health. “Something took place in a mental health aspect. I cannot disclose what happened, I cannot disclose the details of that,” he said. “All I can tell you is Bryshere is a friend—he’s like my brother. He is just someone who is dealing with some very interesting mental health issues.”

Wilkins also expressed concern about Gray’s well-being in the legal system. “Bryshere doesn’t need to be in jail. He wouldn’t survive in jail. He needs mental help,” he added.

Gray has been charged with one misdemeanor count of assault and battery. He was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment hearing on Wednesday.
