Chris Paul Opens Up About NBA Retirement Plans: I Have a Year, At Most
NBA veteran Chris Paul recently joined Jemele Hill on her Spolitics podcast during the American Black Film Festival in Miami, where he got candid about the next phase of his life—both on and off the court.
When asked how much longer he plans to play in the league, Paul didn’t shy away from the reality of his basketball journey nearing its end.
“At the most, a year,” he told Hill. “I just finished my 20th season, which is a blessing in itself. I’ve been in the NBA for more than half of my life. But these years—you don’t get them back with your kids, with your family.”
Known affectionately as “CP3,” Paul has had a legendary run in the NBA. Over two decades, he's earned 12 NBA All-Star selections, four All-NBA First Team honors, two Olympic gold medals with Team USA, and a spot on the prestigious NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
Still, one achievement has eluded him: an NBA championship. As he enters free agency, fans are wondering if there’s still a chance he might find the perfect team for one final title run.
When asked about his next move, Paul admitted, “I have no clue.” Last season, he played for the San Antonio Spurs, where he averaged 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game—solid numbers for a seasoned player still making an impact.
Whether he secures a final contract or not, Paul’s legacy is already cemented. And as he looks ahead to life beyond basketball, it’s clear that family, reflection, and purpose are taking center court.
